Overview
About SALT Escape
SALT Escape is a freediving school in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on South Africa's subtropical east coast. The school teaches Molchanovs courses from Discover Freediving through to Wave 2 Advanced (30m depth, no-fin techniques), with all training in the open ocean. Beyond courses, SALT Escape runs immersive retreats at Sodwana Bay that blend freediving with breathwork, yoga, and meditation, plus ocean safaris and Hurricane Squad apnea swim training, a hypoxic pool programme designed to build breath-hold capacity, CO2 tolerance, and water confidence. A portion of proceeds goes to non-profit ocean conservation organisations.
Relaxed and supportive, with a focus on building water confidence and connecting with the ocean. The school treats freediving as both a skill and a meditative practice, with sessions designed to feel accessible rather than competitive.
Whether you are looking to discover apnea for the first time or earn a recognised freediving certification in Durban, SALT Escape provides a structured path. The school accepts both first-time freedivers and experienced divers pursuing deeper progression. Instruction is available in English.
The people behind it
Meet the Founder
Angie started diving in 2009 at Aliwal Shoal and discovered freediving through a shark encounter that changed her relationship with the ocean. She completed her Molchanovs Level 2 in October 2022 and earned her Level 3 and Instructor qualification in February 2024. She sees freediving as a way to build inner confidence, patience, and resilience, and is passionate about ocean conservation through education, inspired by Dr. Sylvia Earle's philosophy that we can't protect what we don't understand.
