About Bali Freedivers

Learn freediving in Amed, Bali with Bali Freedivers — East Bali's premier apnea school with 100+ five-star reviews. Founded in 2023 by Jan and Freda, the school offers a full progression of Molchanovs and SSI freediving courses from Try Freediving through Level 3, plus personalized coaching and a 2–4 week Master Program. Lead instructor Jan has 8+ years of experience as a freediving instructor and expedition manager, having moved to Indonesia in 2013 and certified as an instructor in 2016. His philosophy — "freediving is a psychosomatic practice that helps us harmonize mind and body" — shapes every class. All courses include equipment, pool fees, studio access, study materials, and video footage of your sessions. Training takes place at Amed's calm shore-access reefs and moored line-diving sites with 40–45m depth, just two minutes from the school. With small group sizes, daily ice bath sessions, multilingual support, and internationally recognized certifications, Bali Freedivers is the ideal place to start or advance your freediving journey.

Jan's teaching philosophy centers on freediving as a psychosomatic practice — harmonizing mind and body through progressive breath-hold training. Classes combine theory, breathwork, pool dynamics, and line diving with individualized coaching, small groups, video review, and daily ice bath recovery sessions.

Whether you are looking to discover apnea for the first time or earn a recognised freediving certification in Bali, Bali Freedivers provides a structured path. The school accepts both first-time freedivers and experienced divers pursuing deeper progression. Instruction is available in English, Indonesian, Russian, and Ukrainian.

The people behind it

Meet the Founders

Portrait of Jan

Jan

Jan is the co-founder and lead freediving instructor of Bali Freedivers. He has been based in Indonesia since around 2013 and has been actively involved in freediving and teaching since approximately 2016. His role is focused entirely on in-water coaching, training delivery, and guiding students through their freediving progression. He is described as someone who brings a calm, experience-based approach to teaching in the ocean, with an emphasis on safety, comfort in the water, and gradual skill development. His work centers on helping divers build confidence and improve step by step while maintaining a strong connection to the ocean environment.

Portrait of Freda

Freda

Freda grew up across several cities in Java, Indonesia, far from the ocean. Although she had limited access to the sea during her childhood, she developed a strong attraction to the underwater world and began her journey by teaching herself how to swim. After becoming part of the freediving community in Yogyakarta, she started exploring Indonesia’s marine environments more deeply. Since then, she has traveled extensively, consistently inspired by marine life, which has also influenced her creative visual art work. In 2019, she expanded her passion by creating the freediving brand Fish on Stilts. What began as a creative initiative has grown into a recognized name in Indonesia and internationally, reflecting her connection to freediving and the sense of freedom she associates with being underwater. At Bali Freedivers, Freda plays a central role in operations as General Manager and Marketing Lead, ensuring smooth organization and supporting the experience of students attending freediving training in Amed or starting beginner courses.

Had a really great freediving session with Yan today and honestly appreciated how attentive and structured the whole experience was. Before getting into the water, he actually listened to what I wanted to work on, what my goals were, and adjusted the session accordingly. During the dives I received clear feedback after each immersion, which made the training feel very productive and personalized. The equipment was also excellent — comfortable suit, proper low-volume mask with great visibility, everything felt well-prepared and professional. He filmed a lot of high-quality GoPro videos that were genuinely useful for technique analysis afterwards. What I appreciated the most was the atmosphere: calm, focused and comfortable. I felt relaxed in the water and could really concentrate on improving instead of just “going through the motions.” You can feel that he genuinely cares about the quality of the experience and the progress of his students. Definitely added a lot of valuable knowledge and confidence to my diving today 🙌

I highly recommend it for both experienced and beginner freedivers. They offer courses, equipment rentals, and a shop. They have a wide selection, and they found high-quality materials tailored to my needs. The guys are well-versed in freediving. Yan is very friendly and explains complex topics clearly, and he knows this from personal experience. They speak several languages. A great team.
